Everything you need to know before, during and after buying a TerrainHopper.
TerrainHopper is a British manufacturer of all-terrain mobility scooters, designed and built by hand in Lincolnshire. Our machines are engineered to take disabled riders to the places standard mobility equipment simply cannot reach — mountains, beaches, forests, farmland, mud, snow and everything in between. Every TerrainHopper is Class 3 certified and registered as a medical device.
No — and that's intentional. TerrainHopper products are designed and sold exclusively for disabled people and the organisations that support them. We don't sell to able-bodied individuals for recreational use. This isn't a policy we apply reluctantly — it's fundamental to who we are. Every TerrainHopper goes to someone who needs it, and that shapes everything from how we engineer the machines to how we price, certify and support them. If you're not sure whether you qualify, contact us and we'll have an honest conversation with you.
Yes. We work with care homes, outdoor activity centres, disability charities, rehabilitation centres and equipment providers who supply TerrainHoppers to disabled individuals. If you represent an organisation, contact us directly to discuss your requirements — the process and VAT rules differ slightly from individual purchases.
Yes. Many TerrainHoppers are purchased by family members, carers or deputies acting on behalf of a disabled person. The machine must be for the personal use of that disabled individual. VAT exemption still applies in these circumstances — we'll guide you through the simple declaration process when you're ready to buy.

All prices on the TerrainHopper website are already zero-rated for VAT. Because our products are sold exclusively for use by disabled people, eligible buyers pay no VAT — the price you see is the price you pay. Nothing is added at checkout.
Under UK law, you're eligible to purchase a TerrainHopper VAT-free if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a long-term and substantial adverse effect on your ability to carry out everyday activities. In practice, if you're a disabled person buying a TerrainHopper for your own personal use, you will almost certainly qualify. If you're unsure, contact us and we'll talk it through with you.
When you purchase a TerrainHopper, you'll be asked to complete a simple written declaration confirming that you're a disabled person buying the machine for personal use. This is a standard legal requirement under HMRC rules and takes just a moment. We keep a record of your declaration as required by law. It's important that the declaration is accurate — it is the buyer's legal responsibility to confirm they qualify.
It depends on the organisation type and how the purchase is structured. Charities and certain eligible bodies may also be able to purchase VAT-free for use by disabled individuals. Contact us directly and we'll work through the specifics with you.
VAT exemption is a UK-specific provision. If you're based in another country, different tax rules may apply. Contact us and we'll advise based on where you're located.

There are two ways to experience a TerrainHopper: Visit our base in Lincolnshire — come to The Old Grain Store in Louth, test drive any model across our private terrain, meet the team and see how every machine is built. This is always completely free. Mobile demonstration — we bring a TerrainHopper to you so you can try it on terrain familiar to you. A travel fee applies based on the distance from our base, but this is fully refundable against the purchase of any TerrainHopper. Visit the Try or Buy page to book either option.
Yes — completely free. Come to our Lincolnshire workshop, ride on our private terrain, meet the people who build the machines and ask every question you have. There's no charge and no obligation.
If we travel to you, a fee is charged based on the distance from our base in Louth, Lincolnshire. This covers our time and travel. The full fee is refunded against the purchase price of any TerrainHopper if you go on to buy — so if you purchase, the demonstration costs you nothing.
We introduce you to the controls, help you find the right seating and control configuration for your needs, and let you ride. We're there to answer questions, not to sell. You ride, you ask, you decide in your own time.
None at all. A demonstration is a chance to experience the machine before making any decision. Many riders know straight away. Others take more time. Both are completely fine.
Many people do. We're based in beautiful Lincolnshire — coast, countryside, market towns and quiet lanes all within easy reach. If you're travelling and need an overnight stay, let us know when you book and we'll send you a few local recommendations from people who know the area best.

Yes. This is one of TerrainHopper's defining features. Over 15 years of working with disabled riders, we've developed a wide range of adaptations to suit different conditions and mobility levels. Tell us about your needs and we'll talk through what's possible.
Current adaptations include: Joystick controls for riders who cannot grip or operate traditional handlebars; single-finger operation for riders with very limited hand function; adjustable seating configurations for different mobility conditions; harness systems for stability on steep terrain; custom joystick sensitivity settings for progressive conditions such as MS and Parkinson's; extended chassis for taller riders; sealed electronics for beach and water environments; towbars and accessories for working environments. If your requirement isn't listed here, contact us — it's likely we've encountered it before.
Quite possibly, yes. We've engineered controls for riders with tetraplegia, single-finger operation capability, and a range of conditions affecting grip and dexterity. The best way to find out is a test drive, where we can assess which control configuration works for you.
We design with this in mind. Many of our riders have conditions such as MS, Parkinson's or motor neurone disease where needs evolve over time. Control configurations can be adjusted and adaptations added or modified. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.

The best starting point is a test drive — it lets you confirm the right model and adaptations before committing. Once you're ready, visit the Try or Buy page or call us directly on 01472 566 566.
Contact us directly to discuss payment options. We understand that even at VAT-exempt prices a TerrainHopper is a significant investment, and we're happy to talk through what works for you.
